DVSA reminds ATF operators of RBT update requirement’s

The DVSA is encouraging ATF operators to prioritise updating their roller brake testing software. Following a communication in January 2024 regarding necessary updates, the DVSA is reminding operators of the extended compliance deadline of December 31, 2025.

These software updates, which align with new legislation, bring many benefits. They enhance usability and functionality, eliminate manual workarounds, and make operations smoother and more efficient. Moreover, they offer valuable insights into the overall performance of brake tests, paving the way for a more streamlined and effective process.

It’s worth noting that these updates are distinct from the regular DTP number database updates conducted twice a year. Many ATFs have successfully upgraded their systems and benefit from the improvements. These upgrades allow for key annual test and road safety improvements, which include:

  • updates to service brake efficiencies, including drawbar trailers
  • changes in how secondary brake performance is measured
  • key programme changes to prevent tyre damage
  • improved workflows to aid consistency of brake testing at test and preventative inspection
  • the inclusion of advisory items to better support wider preventative maintenance of vehicles/trailers and road safety

Most roller brake testers can be upgraded during routine calibration visits. However, for ATFs that are unable to upgrade their equipment, we want to stress the importance of taking action. We encourage you to contact us to discuss replacing your CV brake tester. This will ensure you have sufficient time to plan and implement the necessary replacement and avoid any last-minute rush or disruption to your operations.

Our BTA/HGV CV brake tester is DVSA-approved to ATF standards and can be used to conduct Class 5 (HGV & PSV) brake testing on trucks and buses. It also supports parking brake testing with a capacity of up to 30kN. Key features include an electronic motor brake, automatic slip detection (to prevent tyre damage), and a hot-dip galvanized chassis with high-quality bearings for minimal maintenance.
